Safety first

Safety in regenerative medicine must be checked per treatment. Three kinds of records to verify — procedures, data, structure — and warning signs to stop.

Safety is checked per treatment

Regenerative medicine cannot be judged as safe or dangerous as a whole. Evaluations change with the cell type, manufacturing, administration, target disease, and delivery system.

Start from what harms have been reported, how often, and how long patients were followed.

Three records to check

First, procedure records: whether review and notification under the law were completed. Second, data records: whether supporting studies and adverse event reports exist. Third, system records: whether emergency responses and follow-up are defined.

Look for these in brochures and consent documents.

Signals to pause

No explanation of evidence, no explanation of risks, pressure to sign quickly, or refusal to allow comparison with alternatives are reasons to stop.

Opinions from disinterested third parties such as your primary physician or a second opinion help.
